ABSTRACT
Ang, Raymund D. and Valdehueza,
Odette Leh C., Profitability of Municipal Hook and Line Fishing in Miag-ao,
Iloilo, 1998, a research project presented to the Division of Social Sciences,
University of the Philippines in the Visayas, Miag-ao, Ioilo, 1999.
It has been said that
development of large and medium-scale fishery has not eased fisherman engaged
in traditional, small-scale fishery.
Fisherman continue to hold on to their “crude” methods of fishing which
are well-adapted to natural and ecological conditions. Instead of being wiped
out by the new technology, traditional fishery has become more diversified;
traditional fishing methods had been consolidated and transformed as the
fisherfolk, in their continuing struggle for survival, made room for
innovations.
The study primarily aimed to
provide a better understanding of the profitability of municipal hook and line
fishing in three (3) coastal barangays of Miag-ao, Iloilo.
The objectives of the study
were to describe the socio-economic characteristics of the municipal hook-and-line
fishermen, determine the profitability of municipal fishing using the
hook-and-line gear, and identify the problems of municipal fishing and recommend
possible solutions.
The economic indicators of
municipal fishing were analysed descriptively and analytically by using
frequencies, percentages and averages.
Frequencies refer to the socio-economic indicators of the municipal fishermen.
Percentages on the cost of production. Averages on the cost structure.
The result of the study showed
that across 3 barangays, fishers from Barangay Baybay Norte (3,065.23 in
Philippine Peso (Php) attained the biggest catch while fishers from Barangay
Sapa (Php 973.09) got the smallest catch. It was also shown that fishing using
the hook-and-line gear was profitable in Barangays Baybay Norte and Baybay Sur
in Miag-ao, Iloilo. However, Barangay Sapa has a negative pure economic profit
that could be attributed to their fishing only for the sake of self-sustenance.
According to the municipal
fishermen, their usual problem are the bad weather and competition with the commercial
fishermen.
